1. When did you join CrossFit BC?
About October 2016 but I had a few months of travel, so basically April 2017 was when I became more consistent.
2. Why did you choose CrossFit?
I’ve always done some form of fitness, mostly running, triathlon or gym, but this time I knew I needed a membership at something other than a boring gym to keep me motivated through the winter. I figured CrossFit would be more well rounded like the name suggests! I was going to join in 2015 but a friend convinced me to get into Krav Maga. After a year of Krav we started to get into Jiu-Jitsu… rolling around on the ground hugging my sweaty my friend was where I drew the line on that… which got me here instead.
3. What changes in your health, physique and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit?
Mentally, I have a more positive mindset and clear thinking. I’ve been “big and more ripped” in the past but it was a fake fit. Physically now I’m more well rounded in overall fitness, I’m more flexible, and stronger in what were previously weaknesses like shoulders and legs.
4. What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit?
Even though after 6 months you might be “able to”, you don’t have to take your shirt off if you don’t want to. There are people of all ages, shapes and goals. You’re not going to come last in every workout because you’re competing against yourself and only doing weight that suits you, which means you could finish first! Either way, it’s a group workout and everyone in the group wants you to beat you.
5. What is your favourite CrossFit exercise?
It’s hard to choose only one, because I like the variety. I have a love/hate relationship with overhead squats. I think I’ll like muscle ups when I get one. Double unders and rope climbs are good. Burpees suck!
6. What is your favourite activity outside of CrossFit?
Surfing. Only a surfer knows the feeling! Starting to like Mountain Biking due to the lack of waves around here 🙁
7. What is your proudest accomplishment at CrossFit?
Apart from beating Mayhem at every cardio WOD, I’d have to say it’s “almost” getting bar muscle ups.
8. Have you made any changes to your diet?
Not really, I eat more but no real changes because I’ve always had a healthy diet. I don’t drink much any more, but that’s partly because I can’t deal with hangovers.
9. Is there something that people would be surprised to know about you?
One of these three things is true… I was behind Nick Woodman, GoPro CEO, when he rang the bell at the NY Stock Exchange. I’m allergic to grapes. I’m awesome at building forts.
10. What/who inspires you the most?
A few people… at the risk of sounding cheesy the majority of the regulars and coaches at CFBC are awesome, hard to single anyone out. The workouts they can complete and commitment they have is epic. My kids for their energy and happiness. My wife for her endearing nature and love of adventure. Finally, my best friend Ben. He’s always at the forefront of life learning, a high achiever, and he gives unconditionally.
