1. When did you join CrossFit BC?

June 2020

My previous gym did not survive the pandemic and CFBC welcomed me into their community.

2. Why did you choose CrossFit?

For the challenge and for the benefits to my mental health.

3. What changes in your health, physique and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit?

I am much stronger in areas where I was lacking. And even though my cardio is still not where I would like it, the engine is greatly improved.

4. What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit?

You do not need to get into shape to start. CrossFit will do it for you. Plus there is an option for everyone which I like a lot. If you cannot do one thing yet, then you will be given an option that works for you. There are things I cannot do (yet) but the only way to get there is to work through the steps to progress.

5. What is your favourite CrossFit exercise?

Now that I have a functioning shoulder again – snatching!!! It is so technical and really pushes me to be aware of the things I am doing. No outside stress enters the brain when snatching is happening.

6. What is your favourite activity outside of CrossFit?

I like to walk (almost 800 kms in 2020 and that is just from April when I started keeping track) and am continuing to improve my running skills.

7. What is your proudest accomplishment at CrossFit?

Box jumps – could do one or two but never in my wildness dreams did I think I could do a workout where we had to do 30+. This is one movement I never scale now. Sounds simple but just pulling my feet off the ground – literally I did more knee tucks in the latest open then in my entire life. But to be honest proudest moment was during Open 2020 when I told the judge (who was also the coach) to do anything to just let me finish one scaled workout of the five. He kept me on pace and as I was trying to finish I realized everyone else was done and there were people standing around cheering. I finished with 11 seconds to spare and literally was so overwhelmed by finishing but also by the support that I walked out into the parking lot and burst into tears. Still brings me to tears to this day when I describe it. It is a feeling that I had never experienced and don’t know if I even will again. For someone with huge self doubts, I have never felt more proud of myself then I did that night.

8. Have you made any changes to your diet?

Yes – count macros now and despite eating 1000 calories more a day, I have lost 20 pounds since September and have kept it off.

9. Is there something that people would be surprised to know about you?

Not much – I wear my emotions on my sleeve. Pretty open book!
