2. Why did you choose CrossFit?
I had been working out with a trainer at Steve Nash for over a year and felt like I had plateaued; both physically and mentally – it was boring! CFBC is located between my home and office. I walked by the gym a couple of times a day and always wondered “what goes on in there…” I eventually ventured in and it was the single best thing I done for myself in years.
3. What changes in your health, physique and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit?
I have seen incredible gains in general health and well-being. Unfortunately my performance has been a little up and down over the course of the past year due to some outside factors. However, throughout these challenges I have remained dedicated to training and life is so much better when I am working out on a regular basis.
4. What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit?
Just Do It! CrossFit does truly scale to anyone’s ability. It is one hour out of your day that is an investment in yourself and your quality of life. Many people avoid going to a traditional gym because they do not know what they are doing. CrossFit offers constantly varied programming, with experienced coaches and an amazing community of people that support you and your goals.
5. What is your favourite CrossFit exercise?
Naturally my bigger body type favours lifting. So, I enjoy WODs like Grace and Isabel. I also really enjoy team WODs. They combine the right amount of camaraderie with the right amount of rest, to push you through a longer “chipper” style WOD – Always fun!
6. What is your favourite activity outside of CrossFit?
I have my business which can be demanding on my free time. When I have the chance I enjoy golf, sailing and hiking in the summer and travelling in the winter.
7. What is your proudest accomplishment at CrossFit?
I got my Level 1 Trainer certification in October of 2013. It was really rewarding and taught me a lot.
8. Have you made any changes to your diet?
I have experimented with quite a few tweaks to my diet, including both Paleo and The Zone. What works best for me is simply eating as clean as possible during the week, with zero alcohol (the horror!). I do not train on the weekend and enjoy the odd pizza and bottle of wine.
9. Is there something that people would be surprised to know about you?
I’m a foodie / winey. So, CrossFit has become a necessity. Things go to hell quickly when I take too much time off.
10. What/who inspires you the most?
Now that I’m in my early 40’s, I am most inspired by our Masters Athletes. This starts with Coach Troy always leading by example. Richard finishing 7th overall in the Masters Men 60+ category and Susan winning the Masters Women 55-59 division – Incredible!
