1) When did you join Cross Fit BC?
In October of 2014

2) Why did you choose Cross Fit?

I had done cardio all my life and was looking for something that would push my boundaries and force me to tackle goals I couldn’t achieve on my own, such as push-ups, pull-ups and lifting. I had heard about CrossFit, in fact my younger sister couldn’t stop talking about it and many people I knew seemed to be consumed by it as well. The WOD structure, the tech and coaching portion as well as group setting definitely appealed to me. It so happened that CFBC was located on my route to and from work. People would be running in pouring rain and did different things every day while I strolled down with my coffee and did boring workouts on my own. One day I just signed up and like most CrossFitters, haven’t looked back.

3) What changes in your health, physique and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit?
My upper body strength was almost non-existent and although I have a long way to go, I feel a lot stronger. I have more energy, feel healthier and am happier with my body. I still struggle with explosive movements because running half marathons and track & field required pacing and exactly the opposite of some of the things we do at CrossFit, but I know that CFBC will get me there.

4) What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit?
I heard someone else say this when I started and it stuck with me; leave your ego at the door.
Things may seem impossible, difficult and intense, stick around and don’t give up. Don’t compare yourself to others. Know that everyone has been a beginner once and knows what it was like, ask questions and make friends.

5) What is your favourite CrossFit exercise?
I don’t have one favourite exercise per-se, I find myself obsessing about different ones at a time, usually it’s something I am good at or something that took me a long time to get. At the moment I would have to say overhead squats. Last month the answer would be double unders. I secretly like burpees as well.

6) What is your favourite activity outside of CrossFit?

In the summers sailing, hiking and anything outdoor related. I enjoy a run from time to time along the seawall and spending time with family & friends.

7) What is your proudest accomplishment at CrossFit?
Committing to every single workout and seeing it through for the past 8 months. Staying after WOD’s to work on my weaknesses and turning some of them into strengths.

8) Have you made any changes to your diet?
Short answer, not a lot. However, I did increase my protein intake and decrease carbs. Not so easy for a carb person, but I’ve noticed changes in my strength levels as a result.

9) Is there something that people would be surprised to know about you?
That I used to be a professional archer and won the Canadian championships in 2007. I used to coach for years as well. That’s where the CrossFit name Artemis comes from for those who don’t know.

10) What/who inspires you the most?
CFBC community and everyone who works hard at bettering themselves no matter what their fitness level. Just working out alongside friends whom are pushing hard is in itself inspiring, it makes such a big difference when you can’t imagine doing one more wall ball and then you somehow get through 20.
