1. When did you join CrossFit BC?

I started my Foundations in July 2020 (when Coach Chloe got me hooked) and joined regular classes in August 2020.

2. Why did you choose CrossFit?

After months of languishing during the first pandemic-inspired lockdown I was desperate for something new. That, and the lockdown left me feeling like I was in the worst shape of my life. Returning to my usual yoga + cardio routine just wasn’t getting me where I wanted to be. I went looking for more intensity and I definitely found it with CrossFit.

3. What changes in your health, physique and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit?

The most noticeable change is the strength in my arms, shoulders, and lats. I look at old pictures of myself and can’t believe how scrawny I was.

4. What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit?

It’s not required before you start, but I’d highly recommend finding a workout buddy at some point (I met mine at the gym). Shout out to Haya for always pushing me to go a little harder!

5. What is your favourite CrossFit exercise?

Probably back squats, or maybe squat cleans. Anything to do with squatting!

6. What is your favourite activity outside of CrossFit?

Either yoga or skiing, depending on the season and altitude.

7. What is your proudest accomplishment at CrossFit?

Back squatting 200lbs. Or maybe doing a meager five pull-ups without a band. The back squat should be more impressive, but given my alarmingly weak pre-CrossFit arms the pull-ups are probably the bigger win.

8. Have you made any changes to your diet?

I used to follow Michael Pollan’s advice: “Eat real food, not too much, mostly plants.” Now my motto is: “Eat real food, tons of protein, mostly plants.”

9. Is there something that people would be surprised to know about you?

I’ve visited 30 different countries across 5 continents.

10. What/who inspires you the most?

The person who inspires me the most is my three-year-old niece, M., who’s battling leukemia. She’s the bravest and strongest girl I know. You can make a donation to the BC Children’s Hospital to help end childhood illness here: https://www.bcchf.ca/
