1. When did you join CrossFit BC?
I joined in August, 2013

2. Why did you choose CrossFit?
I was looking for something that would make staying fit fun and challenging. I was bored of the boring gym workouts with leg days and back days and shoulder days and 75 minute cardio days… With CrossFit there is a new WOD everyday so I’m never bored, it makes me want to be better every time I work out, and provides such an amazing community of like-minded, fun and supportive people.

3. What changes in your health, physique and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit?
I never thought I would be able to deadlift, squat, snatch, C&J as much as I do now; I’m currently the strongest I have ever been! I’m also able to get up and go for a 10km run around the seawall without thinking that I would ever need to train for it, so it’s safe to say my cardio endurance has increased substantially also.

4. What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit?
Just try it. Don’t let it scare you, find a box with an environment that suits your personality and fitness goals, and lose the ego! There will be movements that you’re good at, some that you’re not. Just remember that everything is scalable.

5. What is your favourite CrossFit exercise?
Practicing any of the Olympic lifts, handstand push-ups, burpees, box jumps, kettle bell swings…. actually, it’s easier to say what isn’t my favourite – wall balls and double-unders.

6. What is your favourite activity outside of CrossFit?
Getting outdoors and going for hikes, or skiing in the Winter.

7. What is your proudest accomplishment at CrossFit?
Honestly, PRs aside – the fact that I keep coming back day in and day out, even after an emotionally and physically challenging WOD, is an accomplishment for me in itself. I’ve never been one to stick to a fitness activity for very long…

8. Have you made any changes to your diet?
Nothing major, except that I’m more conscious of what I eat and I eat/drink in moderation instead of going from one extreme diet or not dieting at all.

9. Is there something that people would be surprised to know about you?
A favourite activity that I don’t have time for anymore is doing track days at Mission Raceway… the thought of driving at a high speed down a straight then decelerating extremely quickly into a hairpin turn on a race track brings me great joy. Oh, and I have a severe lack of swimming ability (any swim coaches willing to help me out?!)…

10. What/who inspires you the most?
The amazing group of Masters Athletes at CFBC is so inspiring. To witness the degree of fitness being achieved at such a high-performing competitive level at any age is absolutely phenomenal and makes me want to stay fit and strong for the rest of my life.
