1. When did you join CrossFit BC?

3 years ago? 4 years ago? time has lost all meaning since the age of 40….

2. Why did you choose CrossFit?

Lifting, metcon and gymnastics all in one! What’s not to love about that? Although I was quite active and physically fit before joining CrossFit, I was definitely ready to level-up and looking for a way to challenge my physical fitness and enjoy. There is ALWAYS more to achieve in CrossFit and I love that. It’s a fun journey. Sidebar: I can be (slightly) competitive and CrossFit gives me all the variety plus some friendly competition with the other members. The partner workouts are my favorite.

3. What changes in your health, physique and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit?

Hmmmm….how has my physique changed? Well I’ve had to size up some of  my blouses, I’ve split a pencil skirt and a few dress pants…so I’ve definitely put on some more muscle since starting Crossfit – and I love it! Overall, the experience has been life-changing. After I stopped competitive field hockey in my early-20s I had been looking for physically challenging activity I could be really passionate about – the kind of sport that lets you forget anything and everything around you for that moment. A true escape. All that changed when I discovered CrossFit. At 45, my strength, cardio and stamina has never been better. The community at CrossFit BC is quite exceptional and I cherish the connections I’ve made with members and coaches.

4. What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit?

There is nothing to fear and everything to gain! Far too often I hear people are concerned about the “injury risk” in CrossFit. Yet the injury risk is much higher in any team sport, or even most individual sports for that matter, not to mention the risk of injury to your health if you lack neuromuscular strength, mobility and cardiovascular fitness as you age. CrossFit is for all levels and ages. It’s great for your mental, physical and social well-being. The single best prescription for your health.

5. What is your favourite CrossFit exercise?

Oh anything where I can beat Darren! HA HA. Love ya bro.

6. What is your favourite activity outside of CrossFit?

Sleeping

7. What is your proudest accomplishment at CrossFit?

Competing in my first CrossFit challenge last Fall with my 12-year old daughter cheering me on!! Definitely a proud moment. I want to be the best role model I can for her, the young athletes I coach in field hockey and for my patients. Lead by example.

8. Have you made any changes to your diet?

No, I’ve always consumed a well-balanced and healthy diet.

9. Is there something that people would be surprised to know about you?

I am a pathologic overachiever…oh wait you already know that about me 🙂

Ummmm….I get really excited about watching football (NFL) and driving fast cars!

10. What/who inspires you the most?

Any high-achieving, hardworking female boss/professional who maintains sound values and places a high priority on her own health. That tells me you respect the hustle, honor the people around you AND you know your self-worth. I feed off that vibe. Bonus if you’re all that plus a mother!

Also, my patients inspire me everyday. As an integrative oncologist, I work with people who are dealing with cancer. I am humbled by the courage, grace and resilience they demonstrate to overcome the fear and anxiety of their diagnosis and persevere for the hope of a better tomorrow. Growth is what happens when we wrestle with our deepest fears and face our most difficult struggles, knowing there is uncertainty in the outcome yet consciously choosing to do whatever is necessary for the best possible outcome. Health is our most precious gift and not to be taken for granted. Be grateful to your body every day for what it does for you and allows you to do. Never underestimate your capabilities.
